WHAT IS CATARACT? WHAT CAUSES CATARACT?
Cataract is clouding of the natural clear lens of the eye mostly due to ageing. Vision is reduced because of cataract and cannot be improved even with the glasses. The complaint varies with different types of cataract. from increased glare and haloes around the lights to complete loss of vision. Though a cataract occurs mostly in elderly patients, it is not uncommon to see it in young individuals and even children. Metabolic disease like diabetes and long term use of steroids can also lead to cataract. In children it can be associated with some congenital disorders. Injury to eye can also lead to development of cataract.
INDICATIONS FOR CATARACT
Cataract symptoms include:
- Vision that’s cloudy, blurry, foggy or filmy.
- Changes in the way you see colour (colours may look faded or not as vivid).
- Sensitivity to bright sunlight, headlights or lamps.
- Glare, including halos or streaks that form around lights.
- Difficulty seeing at night.
- Changes in your vision prescription, including near-sightedness that gets worse.
- Needing a brighter light to read.

TREATMENT
Cataract, now a day, is treated with the state of the art phacoemulsification method. At our centre, the most modern treatment of the cataract is available. The usual method of cataract surgery consists of removal of the cataract using the phacoemulsification technique, whereby the cataract is broken in to pieces and aspirated from the eye with help of a small probe, sized of 2.2mm. Most of the times surgery is done without administering injectable anaesthesia, making it virtually painless. The patient comfort level is very high and the eye does not require to be patched after operation. Patient can truly walk in – walk out of our surgical centre and also can resume routine very soon as recovery is very speedy.
INTRAOCULAR LENSES
